John Capece holds a Ph.D. in
agricultural engineering from University of Florida (1994) as well as
both B.S.E. (1982) and M.E. (1984) degrees from U.F. in the same
specialization. He is the president of
Southern DataStream,
Inc., a small agricultural engineering and water resources research
consulting firm based in LaBelle, SW Florida.
As water quality engineer at UF-IFAS
Southwest Florida Research and Education Center (SWFREC) between 1994
and 1999, Dr. Capece conducted research and extension programs on
watershed processes including hydrology and chemical transport. Duties
included cooperative studies of soil science,
agricultural engineering, and faculty dealing with citrus, vegetables,
sugarcane, and forages at SWFREC, and other scientists in the
University system and in other governmental agencies. Complete
information on this research and extension program is available
here.
Being an active Rotary member and a talented
fundraiser, Dr. Capece
supported the initiatives on development
projects to raise awareness about
serious water
issues faced by the countries of Africa (Nigeria)
and Central Asia ( Uzbekistan and
Tajikistan) and fund water conservations projects and install
sanitation systems in Central Asia region.
Presentations
made to many Rotary clubs helped to collect
donations and purchase water
supply system materials in Tajikistan and other republics of Central
Asia.
In addition to his agricultural
engineering background, Dr. Capece has experience with international
development/exchange projects and student organizations development. He
is founder and executive director of
Alpha Epsilon Lambda, the
national honor society of graduate students. Here are
some other student organizations founded by Dr. Capece: National Association of Graduate-Professional Students,
Inc.; Intelligentsia International, Inc.
(initially was organized as
Exchange program for
Russian students but recently has
been extended to international internship program); Indians Student and Scholars Services, Inc.; Grad Services, Inc.;
Chinese Academic Link, Inc. and
CRCA. His teaching experience includes a USAID
assignment to the faculty of the National Advanced School of
Agriculture in Cameroon, West Africa, where he taught five courses to
students from freshman to post-graduate level.
With more than ten
years researching, teaching and consulting experience,
he currently runs an Internship program for the
students majoring basically in Engineering, Environmental Sciences,
Journalism, Writing and
Communication. In addition, Dr. Capece
facilitates workshops on
environmental issues, and community engagement.
He is currently researching ways to use
new methods to address community issues
and ways to create and sustain collaborations between
farmers, Universities and
Florida local communities.
