John Capece is the
president of Southern DataStream, Inc., a small agricultural
engineering and water resources research consulting firm based in
LaBelle, a rural community in southwest Florida.
He holds a Ph.D. in agricultural engineering from University of
Florida (1994) as well as both B.S.E. (1982) and M.E. (1984) degrees
from U.F. in the same specialization.
With more than
twenty-five years researching, teaching and consulting experience, he
currently runs an internship and visitors program for the students and
young professionals majoring in engineering and other disciplines
while also conducting technical work on river restoration, farm water
quality improvement, utilities planning, water
resources and energy issues.
Dr. Capece is active
in other southwest Florida civic organizations including the
Caloosahatchee River Citizens Association, Watershed Council, and
Glades County Economic Development Council.
The Audubon Society recently named him the 2007 Southwest
Florida Conservationist of the Year.
Also in 2007, John received the Distinguished International
Service Award from Rotary International District 6960 (southwest
Florida) for organizing drinking water supply projects for villages in
developing nations.
As water quality
engineer at UF-IFAS Southwest Florida Research and Education Center (SWFREC)
between 1994 and 1999, Dr. Capece conducted research and extension
programs on watershed processes including hydrology and chemical
transport. Duties included cooperative studies of soil science,
agricultural engineering, and faculty dealing with citrus, vegetables,
sugarcane, and forages at SWFREC, and other scientists in the
university system and in other governmental agencies.
His teaching
experience also includes an assignment with USAID and UF-IFAS to the
faculty of the National Advanced School of Agriculture in Cameroon,
West Africa, where he taught courses from the freshman to senior
level.
Dr.
Capece has experience with international development/exchange projects
and student organizations development. He is founder and executive
director of Alpha Epsilon Lambda, the national honor society of
graduate students. Other
organizations co-founded by Dr. Capece include the National
Association of Graduate-Professional Students, Inc.; Indians Student
and Scholars Services, Inc.; Grad Services, Inc.; Chinese Academic
Link Services, Inc.; Caloosahatchee River Citizens Association –
Riverwatch; and Intelligentsia International, Inc. (organized
initially as an exchange program for Soviet students but later
extended to include students from all nations)
