Water Situation in FL

With the SW Florida explosive population growth, the demand in quality and quantity of potable water increased greatly. As this growth continues, it may demand the change of current water management policies and wastewater disposal practices to protect the quality of underground water supplies and the environment.

In this light the development of a new water management philosophy and innovative concepts that represent departures from the conventional approach receives an invaluable importance.

Having all this in mind and serving as water utilities engineering contractor for Hendry County, Southern DataStream proposes a development of a new Water Utility Master Plan for the county. SDS is involved in projects to facilitate construction of a new RO water treatment plant; construction of a major water transmission and distribution system to serve 4,000 -16,000 new homes.

This internship is a unique opportunity to learn about water utility master planning, utility planning, water management and conservation and many others.

List of tasks:

  • Assist with management and planning tasks for a small public water supply and
wastewater utility serving a community of 10,000 people as described at
    www.HendryUtilities.com

  • Develop and manage information systems for the utility

  • Create plans and ideas for improved services and technology, including surface water supply, groundwater supply, conservation, water reuse, and stormwater management

  • Provide a research on water and wastewater utility systems expansion

  • Prepare a list of potential improvements for water and wastewater treatment
    facilities

  • Provide a research on water and wastewater utility infrastructure needs.

What is RO?
Reverse Osmosis (RO) is a process where water is cleaned by forcing water through an ultra-fine semi-permeable membrane which allows only the water to pass though and retains the contaminants; these filters are sometimes used in tertiary treatment and to pre-treat water in chemical laboratories.

What is water management?
The study, planning, monitoring and application of quantitative and qualitative control and development techniques for long-term, multiple use of the diverse forms of water resources.

What is the main Florida's freshwater source?
Almost 100% of Florida's freshwater is supplied from the groundwater aquifers. These aquifers discharge around 8 billion gallons of water everyday and are among the most productive in the world.

What is an aquifer?
Aquifers are geological formation capable of storing and yielding significant quantities of water. They supply water to wells and springs.
