D3. Carbon Capture Advocacy

Florida Power & Light (FPL) seeks to construct a coal-fired power plant for completion by 2012 in Glades County, not too far from LaBelle that environmentalists say would pump more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere and mercury into the already-polluted River of Grass.

Although FPL is proposing to build the first US ultra-supercritical pulverized coal combustions system (USPCCS), to facilitate future carbon dioxide capture and sequestration in the coming decades, many people are advocating using an even more advanced coal technology – IGCC (Integrated Gasification and Combined Cycle).

This technology is more efficient, cheaper, environment friendlier and provides easier opportunity to capture CO2. However, Glades Economic Development Council selected USPCCS technology. Why is that? Why did they refuse to find and fund a non-profit organization to inform the public about coal-fired power plants, various technologies that might be used, carbon capture and its effect on all of SW Florida community? Why are they pretending that global warming doesn’t happen?

This internship project involves learning about and helping educate Americans on issues of global warming, greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide, carbon capture and carbon sequestration. Interns will develop technical content and general public and media information on this issue. Materials will be posted to a new web site under development at www.CarbonCapture.US and delivered to various media outlets. Interns will participate in civic and advocacy groups engaged in these issues and public education. During your training you will learn much more about this local issue that in a wider perspective influences all of us globally.
