C2. Environmental Education Youth Program
Internship for Education or Environmental Science students (or related disciplines)
Having its mission to support environmental education efforts of the next
generation and thus to bring up thoughtful, engaged citizens that will learn
to see the connection between the human activity and the condition of the
nature and wildlife around, SDS in cooperation with some community-minded groups and non-profit organizations
(Rotary
International, SFWMD, City of LaBelle, Hendry County, KIWANIS and CRCA)
developed an idea of creating LaBelle
Nature Park.
The LaBelle Nature Park is
currently used as a field trip destination for Hendry County K-12 classes. However,
the more ambitious plans call for using the park as the focus of a more
structured K-12 natural resources and environmental education curriculum.
We are seeking an intern willing to research existing curriculum
structures and to compile lessons plans incorporating the LaBelle Nature Park
into the K-12 program that would educate youth to protect the environment.
The list of aims that curriculum would include but is not limited to:
- developing a program curriculum consisting of a variety of workshops
and events conducted within the framework of a park activity and designed
to help the students become more aware of the environment around them;
- investigating through direct observations the role of wildlife and
the manner in which it was both positively and negatively affected by
humans;
- stimulate students’ desire to participate in management of natural
resources, pursue further studies in related fields and perhaps promote
the pursuit of environmental careers.
