B1. Design and Development of an Automatic Water Sampler

Training for Mechanical, Electrical and Computer Engineering students

SDS has developed and produced a low cost automatic water sampler that includes electronic, hydraulic and mechanical components. This assignment involves designing, assembling and testing a composite water sampler, using off-the-shelf components (relays, pumps, solenoid valves, etc.), offering an excellent opportunity for practical application of engineering skills and ideas. We are therefore seeking students and recent graduates prepared for taking on the challenge of developing creative solutions, to improve current automatic water sampler model. The resulting next generation sampler will be very helpful in addressing needs of hydrologists and other scientists, as well as local community.

B1 assignment

    List of main tasks:

  • Study currently used water sampler;
  • Document all weakneses of current design;
  • Suggest design improvements;
  • Test functionality of newly developed improvements;
  • Perform field measurement;
  • Collect water samples during field trips;
  • Process collected water samples in a laboratory;
  • Document all activities in field logs;
  • Identify and document potential quality control problems and develop new procedures for reducing them.
